Stone & Timber

Two materials, one idea: permanence meeting lightness.

About the Project

On a north-facing slope above the Dales, this house is a study in contrast: a heavy base of dry-stone walling — built by the same family of wallers who have worked this valley for three generations — supports a lightweight timber superstructure that appears to float above the landscape. The cantilever at the south end extends the living room over the slope, placing the occupants in the middle of the view.
